No blog post yesterday. Why? Because I was out most of the day. Through research and discourse with other writers, I have decided to create my own self-publishing company. Apparently bookstores and reviewers may not take you as seriously if your publisher is Amazon or CreateSpace. Go figure. So here’s what Hubby-pants and I went through:
- Parked car in Camden, NJ. (Google it, you don’t want to go there unless you have to.)
- Went to City Hall.
- Took one look at security and metal detectors and remembered that we both carry knives. Back to the car.
- Returned to City Hall. Pointed in the direction of the Camden County Clerks Office down the hall.
- Filled out an application to register my business, Blood Read Press (pronounced blood “red”), with the state of New Jersey.
- Application approved and notarized!
- Now what?
- Told to go the bank and open a business account (which I planned on doing anyway), then go to a building near the aquarium (?) to apply for a Tax ID number.
- Went to the bank. A man named Bihn K. Do helped us. He had a heavy Asian accent and a coke nail. I decided to call him Binkydoo in my head.
- Found out from Binkydoo that we needed the Tax ID first if I wasn’t going to use my social security number as my Tax ID.
- Headed to the building near the aquarium.
- They don’t actually assign Tax ID’s. (Grrr) Given websites to apply for a Federal Employee Identification Number first, then a Tax ID.
- Stopped for lunch at home. I had a Greek yogurt. Yum.
- Went to website to apply for FEIN.
- Couldn’t apply for FEIN. IRS records didn’t match. Why? Because I forgot to change my name on my social security card when I got married. (Oops.)
- Headed to Social Security Administration. Took a number.
- Forgot marriage license. Went back home.
- Returned to Social Security Administration with marriage license in decorative box. Just missed number. Took another number.
- Changed name. Found out the change won’t be recognized in the system for 24-48 hours. Still couldn’t apply for FEIN yet. 😦
And that’s why the title of this post said “sort of.”
To be continued…
very smart idea! i haven’t done that yet, but i should. thanks for outlining the process!
You’re very welcome! I’m glad you found it helpful. I was looking all over for something that described the necessary steps in detail HERE IN THE STATES! Everything I found was for the UK or Canada. Ugh! I’m still working out the kinks, but I’ll be sure to keep posting about it along the way!
Congratulations on taking the steps to be taken seriously in the publishing industry. I love your company name. I’m saving up now because I plan on creating my own publishing company too. I already know the name–hopefully it’s not already taken. Should probably Google. I know the ISBN’s are reasonably priced from Createspace, but I’m worried about the cost of taxes, licenses, and applying for all the other stuff like you just did today.
Good luck! And can’t wait for your book to come out.
Keep smiling,
Yawatta
P.S. You’ve motivated me to research the requirements for your own company if live in West Virginia.
Thank you so much! I know I’m going to have to tell people how it’s pronounced for the rest of my life, but I like the name too.
I’m glad I could motivate you! I don’t think it’s very costly. It was $57 to register the business with the county clerks office. I’m waiting to hear from a legal secretary friend of mine on whether or not I should go for sole proprietorship or LLC. They’ll be another post after I hear from her. Remind me and I’ll let you know if there were any other costs involved. You should do it sooner rather than later though because a lot of stuff we purchase and pay for is tax deductible. Editing, graphic designers, office furniture, notebooks, pens, writing software, etc.
Good luck! And thanks for the kind words about my book!
I’ll definitely remind you about posting about costs. That’s a good idea to become a company now; for whatever reason, I assumed writers had to wait until their first book was actually published. How much I spend on writing materials, I’ll have a hefty tax deduction LOL. I’ll google now to see if my publishing name I’m interested in is already taken.
Keep smiling,
Yawatta
Good luck! I think when you go to irs.gov there’s a link to search to see if your business name is taken.
When I Googled the name, unfortunately, it was already a popular name among children books publishers and regular book publishers. I’ll have to come up with a Plan B.
Keep smiling,
Yawatta
Oh no! That’s such a bummer, I’m sorry.
Congratulations. I would go through such struggle for something worthwhile. Wishing you much luck and success.
Thank you so much! It’s very frustrating because I never paid much attention in my mandatory business classes so a lot of the stuff is confusing, but I think I can get the hang of it all eventually.
As we’d say here….what a per-laver (sp? Lol)
Congratulations though honey!!!!!
Xx
Per-laver? I have no idea what that means. Hahaha. But thank you for the congrats, Vikki. You’re my favorite biggest fan. 😉
I’m not sure exactly how you spell it, but I say it like “per-lava” lol. It might just be a London thing lol 🙂 it means like, what a nightmare, what a load of agro 😉
He he he 🙂
Xx
Load of agro? Where do you Brits come up with this stuff?! I love it!
I heard an agent speak recently and she said, write a book that could be published overseas, ESP in the States. Well, that’s mine out the window then! Lol
Xx
Lol. The last two books I read were from UK authors and I’m not going to day I understood everything. Took me forever to figure out that you guys call the trunk of a car a ”boot” and the hood a ”bonnet.” Haha
He he he, I bet it did! 😉
Xx
Wait, you BOTH carry knives?? I thought I lived in the hood lmao. Congrats again and kick ass!
Haha! Yes! He carries one on his belt for emergencies or whenever he needs to cut something throughout the day. I carry one in my purse for protection. We live in the suburbs, but you never know. I’d carry a gun if I could. Lol. Hey, that bookstore I work in gets creepy at night when I’m working alone!
Oooh! Exciting! Keep us posted 🙂
